Must I apply in writing?
Yes, Council will accept hard copy or emailed applications. Your application should include a covering letter, a copy of your resume and a completed application form. Your letter should explain why you are interested in the job, the application form will provide you with the opportunity to describe how you meet each of the Selection Criteria. The criteria are also listed in the Position Description. For applications via email signed copies of application documents may be produced at interview.
Will you consider applications that don't address the Selection Criteria?
If you have equivalent or similar experience put it down on your application.
What do you mean by 'addressing Selection Criteria'?
The purpose of selection criteria is to show what skills and knowledge are necessary to do the job. Your response to each of the selection criteria must reflect the level of knowledge and skill you have, so that the person reading your application can clearly see whether you can do the job successfully based on your prior experience.
Please note
"Yes" under the criteria will not let us know what you have done to demonstrate you can do it, similarly "see resume" will not suffice and put you at a disadvantage when compared with applicants who take the time to break down their experiences and relate them to criteria.
In short, you need to tell us what you have done that will enable you to do what is needed rather than just confirming that you will know what to do.
Often a simple "cut and paste" from your resume into the application document will usually be enough, it demonstrates a willingness to complete the paperwork required.
For example, you might say something like: "In my role of (previous position) at (previous workplace) I have………… (Describe the work you did that is relevant to the job you are applying for).
Consider your experiences carefully, it is easy to under-value what you know and consider your skills as "common sense" and not break them down and apply them to the criteria.
Use positive and specific language, for example: "I wrote short pieces, contacted other staff to discuss their contributions, formatted and edited the newsletter" will demonstrate a wider range of skills than: "I produced a newsletter".
If you don't meet the selection criterion directly look at what you have done that is relevant and match it as well you can or, try to find examples from your life outside work. For example, you might be a member of a sporting club, or a volunteer.
If you have any questions about what the Selection Criteria mean, or how they might apply to the job, phone us and talk to us about it.
There's not enough room under the selection criteria for what I want to put...!?
Don't worry, if you need to use more space do so, the lines on the form are a guide only, there is no penalty for using extra space.

How do you decide who to choose for an interview?
We match the information given in the Selection Criteria that have been set for the job. To be selected for an interview, you should meet all the essential criteria.
The desirable criteria identify the skills and/or experience that would be helpful in doing the job, but are not essential. If you have some of these, they will be an advantage, but will not rank you higher than those people who meet the essential criteria.
Do you always interview everyone who meets all the essential criteria?
No. If there are a lot of people who meet the essential criteria, the interview panel will give preference to those who meet the desirable criteria as well.
Do you keep unsolicited applications that are sent on spec?
Yes, however it's better to keep an eye on this web page. All our jobs are advertised here as well as local and regional papers and the internet.
