Tourism in the Shire

Welcome to our Tourist Information page. You can access a number of online resources to find out more about tourism, tourist attractions, accommodation and general tourist information in our area.

A Major Tourist Destination

Snowy River Country boasts many quality tourism facilities. Summer visitors are attracted to the breathtaking scenery, walking in the high country and many other activities such as mountain biking, trout fishing, horseriding, rafting, canoeing, paraflying, shopping and relaxing. There are excellent facilities for golf, tennis and squash as well as swimming pools in Jindabyne, Adaminaby and Berridale.

The Shire also services the major winter ski resorts within the confines of the Kosciuszko National Park. The strong skiing trade of winter is supplemented by business generated through other activities and special events throughout the year.

The most important man-made feature for both industry and tourism is the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, showcasing Australia's engineering excellence while providing clean energy to New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. Snowy Hydro is a major tourism facility in the Snowy Mountains.

Within the region villages such as Thredbo Alpine Village conduct a wide variety of summer fun activities each year such as the jazz and blues music festivals, mountain man races, billycart derby, body painting competitions and many flora and fauna educational walks.

Many of the rural homesteads participate each year in the National Open Gardens Scheme. There are also about 80 complete and standing huts in the Kosciuszko National Park, with a further 20 partially standing. More than 20 were lost in the fires of January 2003*. The huts are cared for by the Kosciuszko Huts Association and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. A number of popular huts are accessible directly from a road, or via a short walk.

The Kosciuszko National Park is a national icon. The National Parks and Wildlife Service, Perisher Blue and Kosciuszko Thredbo are major employers and strongly influence both summer and winter tourism.

In the past the peak tourism body, Tourism Snowy Mountains, has been focusing on developing the region as a summer destination. For the year ended December 2007 there were 1,154,000 visits to the region generating 2,457,000 bed nights and AU$479 million**.
