Waste & Recycling
Snowy River Shire Council is currently developing a strategic plan for waste disposal and recycling in the Shire for the next 15-20 years. As Council has spent a large amount of money to keep the Jindabyne Landfill operational, Council's goal is to increase recycling and decrease the amount of waste that is landfilled.
Not only is recycling beneficial for the environment, it also ensures a longer operating life for all of the landfills that Council operates within the Shire. By recycling more at home and separating different types of waste at the landfills and transfer stations the community will assist Council in providing the best possible service to the community while ensuring the life of the waste facilities Council operates.
Illegal Dumping and Littering
There has been an increase in illegal dumping within the Shire recently. Not only does this affect the environment, but it also incurs costs to Council to clean it up. These costs are eventually paid for by the community through the residents' rates and charges. Council encourages any resident to contact us if they witness any illegal dumping so that together we can keep our wonderful Alpine environment clean.
Council also works to keep our streets and paths clean and endeavours to ensure that as little as possible enters our beautiful creeks and rivers. Council will continue to investigate and identify additional materials that might be added to the list of products that can be separated for recycling.
Domestic Collection Service
Council is also reviewing the domestic collection services it operates within the shire in an effort to provide the community with a more efficient recycling and waste collection system. Council will be exploring new avenues in order to provide the best possible service to the ratepayer.
Regional Waste Management Committee
Snowy River Shire Council, Cooma Monaro Council and National Parks and Wildlife Service are involved in a Regional Waste Committee that addresses waste and recycling issues as well as education for the snowy mountains area. One of this year's projects will see the expansion of the "bin your butts" program from the mountains to the Jindabyne and Cooma townships. The group will also be investigating the reduction in the use of plastic bags in the area.
The Regional group will also be investigating more efficient ways to process Greenwaste for use in composting with biosolids from the treatment works. If this is successful the Council may be able to offer usable compost back to the rural properties within the area.
Household Chemical Collection
Every year Snowy River Shire Council and Cooma Monaro Council conduct a Household Chemical collection cleanout service. This is a free service that Councils offer to the community to ensure that poisons and Hazardous chemicals are collected and do not end up in landfill. These goods will be collected at Jindabyne and Cooma landfills and Berridale Transfer station. Check with Council to find out collection days and times.
